What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Colerain woman seeks kidney

Veronica Ann Mills isn't the type of person to let the world, or life, pass her by.

Diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, she's taken the search for a replacement kidney into her own hands.

Mills has put signs up around Colerain, complete with the phrase "A Kidney for Ann." Her hope is that her flyers and posters will draw the attention of someone who might consider giving her a kidney.

Polycystic kidney disease causes sacs of fluid to develop in the kidneys, preventing them from functioning properly, and is a genetic condition. Mills' grandmother had it, but didn't have any major issues until she was well into her 90s. Mills is just 53 and started to face complications from the disease in October 2016. Her primary symptom so far is exhaustion.

The main options for treating the disease are dialysis or a kidney transplant. Transplants are rare, and just 2.5 percent of patients are able to find a donor, however, Mills is hopeful that she will able to find someone in time.

Although no donor has come forward yet, Mills has received an outpouring of support from the local community and from her social circle online. People have offered to put up signs in their yards to help get the word out.

Meanwhile, anyone interested in seeing if they are a match for Mills is encouraged to contact the donor office at Christ Hospital in nearby Cincinnati.
