What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Colerain students soon to enjoy a safer walk to school

Every day, about 100 students walk to Colerain High School on Cheviot Road in Colerain Township. If the township's trustees have their way, the students' walk to school should get a little bit safer soon.

For years, students have walked down the middle of Joseph Road, leading to complaints from drivers and others who use the road.

Last month, the township's trustees signed a design contract, so that sidewalks will be put in place along the stretch of Joseph Road extending from Cheviot Road down toward Colerain Avenue. Cities and towns that plan on creating contracts with contractors or other businesses can use letterheads to make the documents official.

Although the township has only recently voted to take action on the sidewalk, it has been a topic of conversation and debate for more than 10 years. In times past, the plans to make a sidewalk would hit obstacles.

This time around, the township's officials used cameras to learn more about how much that stretch of street is being used. It also conducted a pedestrian count. Both projects made officials realize that the demand for a sidewalk was greater than they had thought and that the project would be a lot easier to carry out than expected.

When the time comes to build the sidewalk, the township will use money from its sidewalk fund to cover the costs.
