What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Aldi opening near Colerain

Plans are underway to open a new Aldi location in Fairfield, which neighbors Colerain, by the end of 2018.

The newest location of the German low-cost grocery store chain will be part of an ongoing redevelopment of Patterson Boulevard. The redevelopment project has been in the works for about 11 years.

Back then, Fairfield joined forces with Newer Properties. The goal was to redevelop the location, which at the time was the site of a 160,000-square-foot shopping center called Fair Plaza. The anchor store in the plaza was a Marsh grocery store. By 2009, much of the plaza had been demolished.

The 2008 recession put many of the city's plans for redeveloping the site on hold. Among those plans was one that would build a housing complex for seniors, which opened last year and has 119 units for people over the age of 55.

City officials who are overseeing redevelopment plans can use banner printing to keep residents up-to-date on any new openings.

The new Aldi will consist of 22,150 square feet. It will have plenty of natural light and is being constructed with eco-friendly building materials, such as recycled materials. The focus of the store will be on fresh items, such as produce, bakery and diary.

In addition to the new location in Fairfield, Aldi plans on upgrading 11 existing stores across southwest Ohio.
