Patchogue celebrates apples
Fall around Patchogue means time for apple festivals.
Pour the Core, a hard cider festival, takes place today at Heckscher State Park from 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm. Guests can sample over 75 ciders and enter the donut eating contest at the East Islip location.
Another festival will be in Setauket and East Setauket tomorrow, September 29, from 11:00 am until 4:30 pm at Sherwood Jayne House, 55 Old Post Road. Hosted by Preservation Long Island, this will be the 30th year for the Long Island Apple Festival. General admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children. Tours through the Sherwood Jayne House will be available to ticket holders.
The Long Island Apple Festival Apple Pie contest, sponsored by Benner’s Farm, Homestead Arts and Preservation Long Island, will run from 9:00 am until 10:30 pm. This will be a traditional state fair-type competition. Three awards will be given for Best Tasting entries and one for Most Beautiful Pie. Pies will be auctioned off, and winners will have their photo taken afterwards. Sponsors of contests such as these often use these pictures for advertising purposes in their brochure printing.
Islip will have its Apple Festival at Islip Grange, 10 Broadway Avenue, Sayville on Saturday, October 19. Local businesses and about 300 craft vendors will have booths with promotional products, business cards, and original works for sale. There will be a Kids’ Zone and live music.
