The community farmers market of Bellport, near Patchogue, opens for its third consecutive year on July 7. Farmers at the market are likely to use local Print services for flyer printing and banner printing to help identify their stalls and provide information and recipes for their produce.
Located at the corner of Station Road and Brookhaven Avenue, the market is open on Saturdays between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm through October. Alternative Forms of payment are accepted, including WIC coupons, EBT cards, and food Stamps as well as cash. A primary reason the market was established was to provide access to fresh, locally-harvested produce to low-income customers.
The market also provides work experience to young people from the local community. Thanks to a program organized by Joanne Massimo of the Suffolk County Veterans, they are able to earn money while learning valuable cash register skills, marketing, and customer service. The teenagers also bring their families to shop at the market and try out new recipes. They help out the farmers by allowing them to spend more time on the farm and less time traveling back and forth to market.
The Bellport Farmers Market is part of a network of community markets run by Sustainable Long Island, and also receives support from the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Sustainable Long Island plans to expand the network into more Long Island communities on a season- by-season basis, bringing "food equity" to more and more of the population and boosting the local economy, as well as community life.
