During its annual award ceremony, held recently at the Adelphi University, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County distributed the Gold Award to more than 70 area Girl Scouts.
One of the recipients of the award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts, was Erin Cassano, a native of Levittown.
To receive the award, Girl Scouts need to dedicate a certain number of hours to the planning, execution, and presentation of a project. Ideally, the project should make the world a better place.

Cassano's project was called ‘Educational Raised Garden Bed’. She created a raised garden bed at her school, MacArthur High School. The garden featured a wicking irrigation system and was built under Cassano's supervision with the help of her classmates in the environmental club. The goal of the project was to help students understand the value of protecting the environment.
To receive the Gold Award, Cassano first needed to submit a project proposal to the Girls Scouts Council. The council provided feedback if needed before approving the proposal. At the end of the project, Cassano needed to present her findings to a committee before earning the award.
Cassano recently graduated from high school and plans on pursuing a bachelor's degree at the US Coast Guard Academy.
