The award is presented by the Levittown Community Council, which includes residents of Levittown, Wantagh, and Seaford. Students can be nominated for the award by the civic organizations that are members of the council. To qualify, a student needs to attend a school in either the Island Trees or Levittown school district
Spano was nominated by Sharlene Defendini, a guidance counselor at the high school. Defendini has worked with Spano on a variety of community service and school projects. Speaking of Spano, Defendini wrote that she was ‘raising spirit within the building’.
Organizations that present similar awards can use Stationery printing to produce the certificates given to the students. Along with her certificate, Spano received a check as part of her award.
Spano's volunteer work includes serving on student council and helping to organize Spirit Night and Spirit Week. In addition to being president of the senior class, she served as vice president for the junior class last year. She has also played a big role in organizing her school's annual food drive, and has served as a member of the school's ‘Peer Pals’ program.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Spano stated:
“This award showed me how I can expand my role to the whole community and encourages me to grow as a leader.”
