The idea of a sit-down restaurant serving "street food" might seem like an oxymoron, but it's exactly what Honest restaurant is.
The newest location of the small chain restaurant recently opened in Hicksville, near Levittown. Honest began its life as a street cart in Ahmedabad back in 1975, and has since expanded to several dozen locations in India, plus five in the US, including the newest location.
Honest serves vegetarian dishes from Gujarat, a state in West India. Much of Gujarati cuisine is vegetarian, although there are areas that serve chicken, seafood, and goat.
New restaurants can use postcard printing to announce their grand openings and to send out discount offers to customers. The newest location for Honest is owned by Vijesh Patel and Prashant Shah. The pair also owns a location in Jersey City, plus Vatan restaurant in the Murray Hill neighborhood of New York City and Raju's Egg & Veg, also in HIcksville.
Some of the signature dishes on offer at Honest include Honest pulav, which is seasoned basmati rice prepared on a flat griddle pan called a tawa. Bhaji pav, a vegetable curry served with buns, is another option, and the restaurant also serves bhakri pizzas.
On the printed menu, some of the dishes are organized by the color of the sauce they come with, including navratan korma (white sauce), dum aloo (red sauce), palak paneer (green), and malai kofta (brown).
The restaurant is open six days a week (closed Mondays) from noon until 10:00 pm.
