High school seniors in Levittown encouraged to apply for scholarship

New York American Water, which supplies water to Levittown and the surrounding area, is once again offering high school seniors scholarships.

The utility company has five $3,000 scholarships available. This is the sixth year the utility has been able to offer the scholarship to students in its service area. The program is part of an effort by the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies.

New York American Water can use Mailing services to get the word out about the financial aid to eligible applicants. Students who apply for one of the scholarships need to meet certain criteria to be eligible.

They have to be planning on pursuing a career in the water utility industry or in a related area. Part of the goal of the program is to encourage bright students to go into the water industry and to eventually solve many of the challenges currently facing it, such as dwindling resources and aging infrastructure.

Eligible students need to major in an area that would somehow lead to a career in the water utility area, such as engineering, chemistry, biology or environmental sciences. Along with currently living in the utility's service area, they need to be U.S. citizens and need to have resided in New York for at least five years. They also need to be in their senior year of high school, maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and plan on attending a two- or four-year program at a college or university in New York.

The deadline for applications is April 1.
