Area near Levittown to welcome new grocery store

Hot on the heels of announcing the opening of a franchise store in Farmingdale in 2016, Stew Leonard's, a regional grocery store and dairy market, is thought to be considering setting up shop in the now-vacant former Pathmark in East Meadow, near Levittown.

The reports of the location in East Meadow come from ‘industry sources’ according to Long Island Business News. When it opens, the East Meadow location of Stew Leonard's will be the company's second full grocery store on Long Island, with the Farmingdale location being the first. Although it has had full service locations in Connecticut and Yonkers, the company previously only operated wine stores on Long Island.

When it is time to make an official announcement, the franchise owners can use postcard printing to let area residents know about the new grocery store. The location of the East Meadow store will be a 70,000-square-foot space. The Pathmark that was once in that location closed in 2013, leaving what residents of the area described as an ‘eyesore’ in an otherwise busy commercial district, according to the Long Island Herald.

The other Stew Leonard's store on Long Island has been in the planning stages for about 10 years. When it opens next year, it's expected to add 400 jobs to the area. The new stores are also expected to benefit local farmers, as the company makes a point to offer produce from local producers.
