Volunteers pack meals for food bank

The Food Bank of Western New York has 40,000 more meals it can serve to those in need, thanks to the efforts of a group of over 200 volunteers, including nearly 70 youngsters, who spent a recent Saturday in Buffalo packing the food.

In late September, the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County held its Family Volunteer Event, the ninth year it has done so. The volunteers assembled the meals and then packed them in larger Boxes, where they are ready for distribution to families in the region who most need assistance. This year’s event was the largest volunteer day in its history. Activities like this also provide an opportunity for companies that can help to put Business Cards in the packages to be delivered.

Katie Buseck, who is with the United Way, said she believes such days help to create an interest in volunteering, and this can last a lifetime. She said that when children see parents volunteering, they understand doing so is something important, and one they should also considering doing. She added that United Way has seen this principle in action, as children who become familiar with volunteering early in life often continue the custom.

In addition to the volunteer efforts, the day drew the sponsorship of Univera and Rich Products, which joined forces to double the number of meals provided at the 2018 event.
