The Lewiston, New York Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the 57th peach festival in a few days, with the official title of the event being the 2014 Niagara County Peach Festival.
According to the Kiwanis website, the three-day event is an old-fashioned celebration that includes a parade, rides, live entertainment across the three days, and foods like peach shortcake, hamburgers, and hot dogs. The festival was first created to honor the area’s farmers and their products.
Peaches will be provided by Singer Farms, now known as Bittner-Singer Orchards. The orchards are near Niagara Falls, and the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario form natural boundaries that moderate the climate. Together, the falls and the lake keep buds from developing too early in the spring, so little fruit is damaged by frost. In addition, they make the growing season longer.
Other events include a beauty contest (the Peach Queen), a cheerleading competition, a peach bake-off, a magician, and a dance showcase. There is also a 5K Fun Run on the menu, as well as taste tests.
The festival, which will no doubt interest people from nearby Buffalo, is slated for this Friday, September 5, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It continues on Saturday from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, and Sunday from noon to 8:00 pm.
Festival organizers could work with a banner printing company to create colorful flags to be used outdoors, thus creating additional excitement about the event.
