Transportation Department reveals designs for Amtrak station

On March 21, New York State's Department of Transportation gave Buffalo residents a chance to take a look at several designs proposed for the city's new Amtrak station.

Approximately 200 people came to the Buffalo Science Museum to see the designs, which were presented by a consultant the department had hired. There are two locations under consideration as the site of the new station: downtown Buffalo's Canalside district, or the Central Terminal on the east side of the city.

The Buffalo Central Terminal is an important landmark. Construction began in 1927 and the building was dedicated in June, 1929, only months before the stock market crash ushered in the Great Depression. Despite this, the station was very busy from its opening until the end of the Second World War, when the interstate highway system encouraged people to drive, and air travel became popular.

The Canalside District is located at what was the west end of the Erie Canal, and is now attraction a lot of redevelopment projects.

The current Amtrak station has some structural problems, and is 65 years old. Consultants say putting a new station downtown would cost between $34m and $86m, while moving it into the old Central Terminal could cost between $68m and $150m.
