The Lofts project at Elk Terminal expanding

The Lofts at Elk Terminal in Buffalo is creating new units. According to a recent news item, the developer, First Amherst Development Group LLC, has already created

72 apartments in the former food warehouse, and is now converting the rest of the space into 25 additional units.

Elk Terminal was built in 1919 as a food warehouse serving the flourishing Elk Street Food Market. It's now the first loft conversion project located in Buffalo's Cobblestone District. First Amherst is generally given credit for starting the trend of converting urban warehouses in the Buffalo area into housing units.

The new apartments will be both one- and two-bedroom units, which range from 1,000 to 1,700 square feet in size. Rents will be from $1,295 to $1,995, and approximately one-quarter of the new apartments will be able to be adapted for use by handicapped persons.

In addition, Lime Energy is now occupying approximately 4,000 square feet of retail space, which is located on the ground floor. The total square footage of the complex will be a whopping 200,000 square feet. In addition, the developer is renovating the 24,000 square feet basement into storage that it will use. The warehouse already has a loading dock, which has been converted into an outdoor area for residents.
