South Buffalo sets up new local food offering

The first farmers' market to be held in South Buffalo opened Sunday, June 1, in Cazenovia Park.

Over a dozen vendors took part in the market, which is sponsored by Christopher Scanlon, a member of the South District Council. The market will be held weekly, and is multi-purpose. Not only will it provide area residents with locally grown, fresh items, it will also give back to small businesses and residents by putting the spotlight on a less well-known area of Buffalo.

According to BizJournals.com, the market got more than 2,800 Facebook ‘likes’ within a few weeks of the page’s launch. However, Scanlon said he did not need social media to understand that something was missing from his district. He pointed out that Western New York has many farmers' markets, but there has never been on in South Buffalo before.

Marty Rosiek, who heads up Farm this Way, said he gets about 50 requests each year to participate in farmers' markets, but cannot attend them all. He did agree to come to South Buffalo, though, to spread the word about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), an organization of approximately 50 members that gets its produce fresh, directly from local farms.

Since the market is an outdoor event, organizers could work with a banner printing company to create sturdy, colorful flags for repeated use during the season.
