Barry Manilow, who has a six-decade career behind him, is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 85 million records worldwide sold as a solo act.
Manilow was an attendee of the City College of New York, then went to the New York College of Music, and Julliard. He paid expenses by working at CBS, where director Bro Herrod asked him to arrange the songs for a melodrama, “The Drunkard.” Manilow wrote an entire score, which Herrod used when the show opened Off Broadway. It ran for eight years. Manilow wrote jingles during this time for companies like State Farm Insurance and Band-Aid, which he said taught him about pop music.
Tony Orlando signed Manilow to his first contract in 1969, and since then, he has released 32 albums, 18 of which have been rated either Platinum, Silver, or Gold by the RIAA. His first album was 1973’s “Barry Manilow,” which made it to No. 28 on the charts and earned a Gold rating from the RIAA. His most familiar songs include “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “Can’t Smile without You.” A review says:
