Last week, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra announced it had formed a Diversity Council, and that its board had unanimously voted to sign the Opportunity Pledge put forth by Buffalo mayor Byron Brown.
Both measures are designed to build stronger networks between the BPO and the community, and to engage the diverse groups throughout the region.
The co-chairs of the council, Rev. Melody Rutherford and Otis N. Glover, said that music has always brought people together, and the Diversity Council wants to encourage everyone to enjoy the BPO. The two went on to say they view their role as reminding the orchestra to diversify its programming and concerts to have a wide appeal to everyone.
The mayor's Opportunity Pledge, which the orchestra has enthusiastically agreed to sign, shares the same goals as the Diversity Council— a commitment to inclusion, equality, and diversity of people throughout the region.
The Diversity Council has set five goals for the orchestra: to feature more artists of color, no matter what is being performed; to tie programs to events important to the community; to collaborate with diverse organizations and colleagues; to support music education in areas that are underserved; and to make sure the organization itself is diverse at all levels.
