Noted folk and Americana singer to come to Buffalo

A multi-talented singer, guitarist, and songwriter who is famed for his expertise in folk rock, rock, and Americana will be performing in Buffalo.

James McMurtry is a native of Ft. Worth, Texas, but was raised in Leesburg, Virginia. He is the son of Larry McMurtry, an acclaimed novelist who wrote best-sellers such as “Terms of Endearment” and “The Last Picture Show,” which were filmed; and “Lonesome Dove,” which became a TV series. Larry gave his son a guitar when the boy was seven, and his mother taught him to play.

His climb to fame and success was slow and steady. He won a song writing contest in 1987, and met John Mellencamp, who was in a film McMurtry’s father had written. That connection gave James a chance to give Mellencamp his demo Tape, and Mellencamp went on to co-produce “Too Long in the Wasteland,” McMurtry’s debut album, which dropped in 1989. Since his debut, McMurtry has released 13 albums, dropping the latest, “The Horses and the Hounds,” in 2021.
