Work has nearly finished on the Northland Workforce Training Center, so the Buffalo Urban Development Corporation has approved a new contract to start the next phase of work on the complex where the center is located. The contract is worth $33.46m.

The construction manager on the upcoming phase of the project, which is located at 683 Northland Avenue, is Gilbane Building Company. The project’s first phase involved building a 110,000 square-foot structure. The building’s front half is designated as the training center; the construction also included the office complex’s first two floors.

The training facility came with a price tag of $58.1m, and should open in September. As many as 350 low-income Buffalo residents will learn manufacturing skills here. A certificate of occupancy has already been issued, and staff members have begun moving in. Managers of training centers such as this can work with a brochure printing company to create a catalog for prospective students.

The remainder of the facility totals 121,346 square feet, and will be the home of a number of tenants, including Buffalo Manufacturing Works (BMW). BMW will have an R&D center totaling 55,000 square feet, while an additional 56,061 square feet is being held for light-industry tenants in the private sector, who could employ as many as 284 people. Facilities that tenants have in common, such as mechanical rooms and loading docks, will utilize the final 14,285 square feet.
