Ben Folds, who is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a songwriter, vocalist, and record producer. He became interested in the piano when he was nine and was in various bands while he was in high school, where he played drums, piano, and bass.
In the 1980s, he and his friend Millard Powers formed the band Majosha and they released an EP in 1988. After they broke up, Folds signed with Nashville Music and played drums as a session musician.
In 1994, he returned to North Carolina where he formed a new group, Ben Folds Five, comprising Folds, Darren Jesse on drums, and bassist Robert Sledge. They described their music as “punk rock for sissies,” and released their self-titled debut album in 1995 followed by a second album in 1997. They broke up in 2001 and Folds went solo.
Since then, Folds has released albums and EPs, worked on film soundtracks, been a judge on “The Sing-Off,” and toured worldwide. His latest solo album, “Sleigher,” appeared earlier this year. A review says:
