Lindsey Stirling began playing the violin when she was five, which gave her a grounding in classical music and music theory. By age 16, she was a violinist in an Arizona rock band, but she really came to public attention when she appeared on “America’s Got Talent” in 2010. She did not win, but her performance brought her to the notice of Devin Graham, a cinematographer, who later helped create music videos to accompany her songs.
In 2011, they released the music video “Spontaneous Me.” It was a hit, and led to the practice of them making videos and posting them on YouTube. Before long, Lindsey had millions of viewers, and the video for “Crystallize” received more than 42 million views.
Lindsey released her self-titled first album “Lindsey Stirling” in 2012. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums and Classical Albums charts. Critics praised the mix of modern sounds such as dubstep and hip-hop with classical music. Her second album, “Shatter Me,” dropped in 2014. A review says:
