What's Happening in Buffalo, NY…

Both the city government and neighborhood organizations are working to improve Shoshone Park in North Buffalo.

The city will be replanting a number of trees that had to be removed because they were diseased. In addition, the pool will be undergoing a major renovation, with $1m dedicated to the effort.

One group that is delighted about the renovations is the North Buffalo Organization (NBO). Its treasurer, Joann Steinmetz, points out that Shoshone Park is an attraction that draws families from throughout the neighborhood. She is looking forward to next summer when the park will have been improved, especially the snack bar. She believes that families will enjoy themselves, particularity if the pool is open again by then.

The NBO is working with other merchant and community groups on the improvements. One of these is a new garden on the park's Hertel Avenue side; the park was a gift from Joe Dash, a grocer. Mickey Vertino, who is president of the University Heights Collaborative, is also happy to see the park getting the improvements it needs. He notes that while there are other parks in the city, this is the one that seems to allow residents to connect with one another.

Projects like this, which are important to a large number of residents, can do well if officials work with a newsletter printing company to help keep people updated on the progress of the work.
