Ice at Canalside ready to open

Buffalo's Canalside area has become a playground for city residents, winter and summer. In summer, people enjoy picnics along the river; in winter, they can ice skate, now that Ice at Canalside is ready to open for the season.

Patrons of Canalside are actually skating on the site of the Memorial Auditorium, the sports arena that was home to many hockey games. The Auditorium stood at the end of the Erie Canal, and the locations of both are marked in the ice.

Ice at Canalside is open for public skating at various hours, which vary depending on the weather. People can skate Wednesdays through Sundays, but should check with the venue to find out the opening hours on any particular day.

Changes have been made to the facility since last season. There is now a new “welcome tent” near the Marine Drive/Main Street intersection. People can pay their admission fee and rent their skates in comfort, in a heated, covered area. In addition, the area known as the “Winter Lodge” will become more public, with additional choices on the menu, including soup and chili. People who do not want to skate can try curling, or riding an ice bike.

The canal opens for the season of public skating today. Venues like this can provide an ideal background for people to take photos to turn into Holiday Cards at their local Print shop.
