The Goo Goo Dolls were formed by John Rzeznik, George Tutska, and Robby Takac in 1986. Rzeznik handled vocals and guitar, Tutska was on drums, and Takac also handled vocals and played bass. Rzeznik and Tutska are still with the group today.
The group started off performing covers, then transitioned into a punk sound, which led to their breakthrough. They hit the mainstream in 1995 with their single “Name,” though their most popular song “Iris” dropped three years later. “Iris” was a record-breaker, spending almost a year on Billboard charts, and remaining for 18 weeks in the No. 1 position on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. In October 2012, Billboard ranked “Iris” as its #1 on the “Top 100 Pop Songs 1992-2012” chart.
Other hit singles include “Broadway,” “Black Balloon,” and “Slide,” all from “Dizzy Up the Girl,” released in 1998. The Dolls have sold 15 million records throughout the world and won four Grammy nominations.
