The 2018 Great Race brings together 120 of the finest collector cars in the world for a road rally later this month, and for the first time, Buffalo will be the starting point of the race.
Entries are limited to cars manufactured before 1972, and this year's field includes a 1927 Peerless 560A, a 1937 Studebaker Coupe, a 1964 Chevy Impala SS, and a 1918 American LeFrance Speedster.
The Great Race is a time, speed, and distance rally rather than a speed race. Each vehicle has a driver and navigator, and the team is given precise instructions they must follow to the second each day. Observers at secret check points score them as they pass, and issue penalties of one second for every second they are either early or late to the check point.
The course winds throughout New England and ends in Nova Scotia nine days after the start, covering a total of 2,300 miles. Competitors will make a number of stops each day.
The event, which began in 1983, was inspired by the 1965 film ‘The Great Race’, a comedy which was itself based on a real road race from New York to Paris in 1908.
This year's Great Race starts from the Pierce Arrow Museum at 10:30 am on June 23. It finishes in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 1.
Organizers of this type of event could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts for observers, listing the participants and their vehicles.
