In 2008, John Barrett founded Bass Drum of Death, with himself as the only member, playing both guitar and bass drum. Since then, the group has had several lineups, and the touring outfit now comprises two guitarists and a drummer.
The band first formed in Oxford, Mississippi, but Barrett later moved to New York City, as the members felt there was no true “music scene” in Oxford. John and his brother Jim began songwriting together in 2020, in Brooklyn, and then returned to Oxford where they finished their recording. They have remained in Oxford and record for Fat Possum Records.
Critics note that the move to New York and back to Mississippi allowed the band to truly find their stride, and their authentic sound. In a statement, Barrett called the moves a “reset,” adding that when he began his career:
“. . . I just wanted to play in a punk band and drink beers and travel around. I didn’t really think much past that. And I got really burned out.”
The move has made all the difference. Bass Drum of Death released their latest album, “Say I Won’t,” in 2023.
Bass Drum of Death will be in Buffalo for the first time ever on April 5. They are appearing at the Buffalo Iron Works. The show is restricted to those 18 years of age and older. Events like this can be advertised using poster printing.
