What's Happening in Buffalo, NY…

A composer and drummer who became enamored with drums at an early age is coming to Buffalo.

Jon Mueller, a Wisconsin native, works in the genres of rock and experimental music. When he was growing up, music was a part of his life, thanks to his parents. When he was very young, he started taking piano and guitar lessons, but stopped these studies in favor of the drums, fascinated by a friend’s drumset. He liked the drums because the focus is on rhythm, not melody. In an interview, he said that no matter how cymbals and drums are struck, they sound good. He started taking lessons on the snare drum, and then went to a full drum kit.

Mueller met guitar player Chris Rosenau in the 1990s, and they became musical associates. They founded several groups, and released “Unmap,” their debut album, which went to No. 92 on the Billboard 200 chart. Throughout his career, Mueller has worked with musicians such as Bhob Rainey, Marcus Schmickler, and Asmus Tietchens.

Mueller shifted direction in 2003, when he experimented by putting vibrating drums atop his speakers. His new sound can be heard on projects like “Metals,” and the album “Alphabet of Movements.”
