Double tribute for Buffalo fans

A band that plays tribute to not one, but two iconic groups is coming to Buffalo.

Steely Dead is a touring band based in Denver, Colorado, which has gained a following by blending the songs of Steely Dan and the Grateful Dead. They literally do mash two songs together; for example, they combine the Grateful Dead’s “Deal” with “Reelin’ in the Years” by Steely Dan to create a number they call “Dealin’ in the Years.” Other combinations include “Truck Friday,” a combination of “Truckin’” by the Dead and “Black Friday” by Steely Dan; and “Fezeree” (“The Fez” by Steely Dan and “Sugaree” by the Dead).

These combinations showcase both the precise recordings Steely Dan made in the studio, and the free-flowing, jam band improvisational style of the Grateful Dead. Bringing the two together provides an insight into each band, and at the same time, gives Steely Dead an opportunity to create original jams that recall rock’s golden age.

Like the bands they emulate, Steely Dead has a fan base of loyal followers who travel from place to place to see them.
