Dietz named as UB department chair

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Buffalo has a new chairman.

David M. Dietz, PhD, has been appointed to the post, according to a press release from the university. Dietz has been on UB's faculty since 2011, during which time his pursuits have included research on the brain's plasticity—the organ's ability to re-wire itself, or modify existing connections—and what impact that quality has on a person's tendency toward drug use and abuse.

Dr. Michael E. Cain (MD), the university's vice president for health sciences and Dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, made the announcement. He noted that in addition to his work at the university, Dietz has had a number of articles published in prestigious scientific Journals. In Cain's words, Dietz's work has “moved the field.”

Dietz currently serves as the main investigator on two grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute for Drug Addictions, studying how the brain changes during cocaine use. Dietz and his colleagues are working to understand how abused drugs affect the brain, and how this can lead to addiction. Dietz is also beginning work on understanding addiction to heroin.

Florida State University granted Dietz his PhD in neuroscience, having conducted postdoctoral work in New York, at the Friedman Brain Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
