One of the most popular musicals of all time is coming to Buffalo.
“Evita,” with music and lyrics by theater legends Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will be in Buffalo for three performances. The show is based on the life of Eva Duarte, the illegitimate daughter of Juan Duarte, who returned to his wife and children, leaving Eva's mother and siblings to live in poverty in the Argentinean village of Los Toldos. When she was 15, Eva moved to Buenos Aires, where she found work as an actress and model.
There, she met Colonel Juan Perón, who went on to become the president of Argentina, with Eva as his first lady, and later, a candidate for the vice presidency. She was a strong supporter of women's rights, unions, and the poor.
A number of films, Books, television adaptations, and musicals have centered on her life, but the most successful by far is “Evita.” The Broadway production won the Tony for Best Musical in 1980.
Among the songs from this show are “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” and the number most closely identified with it, “Don't Cry for Me Argentina.” Michael Grandage handles the directorial duties, with choreography by Rob Ashford. “Evita” opens at Shea's 710 Theatre on November 6 at 7:30 pm, and on November 7 at 2:30 pm, and again at 7:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now.
