The Buffalo Zoo has been working on revamp its reptile house since 2015, and now the project is ready to move forward.
The attraction will be closed until the $3.7m project is finished. Officials of both the zoo and the state announced the start of construction at a recent event.
The reptile house was built by zoologist Marlin Perkins in 1942; Perkins' name will be familiar to television viewers of a certain age, since he hosted “Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom” television series from 1963 until 1985. Perkins was fascinated by snakes all his life, and when it opened, the reptile house he designed was widely seen as the finest in the country.
However, since its exhibits and infrastructure are now over 70 years old, upgrades are needed. They will include a new HVAC system, a new roof, interactive educational exhibits, and several new exhibits, as well renovations to older exhibits to provide more naturalistic habitats. The update will preserve many of Perkins' innovations while also acknowledging the need to modernize the facility.
Once renovations are complete, officials plan to bring new reptile species to the zoo. These include the bushmaster, which is the longest poisonous snake in the Western Hemisphere, and the Komodo dragon, the world's biggest living lizard. The renovations should be complete some time in Spring 2019.
