The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), along with other groups, will be giving concerts and participating in a number of events over the next few weeks. The festivities kicked off on the Thanksgiving weekend, but there are plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy their music throughout the month of December.
On December 6 and 7, Ron Spiegelman will conduct the BPO and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, as well as the Castellani Andriaccio Guitar Duo in a program called ‘Classic Christmas’. Spiegelman, who is originally from Australia, was the associate conductor of the BPO from 2001-2005, and currently is the Lake Placid Sinfonietta's music director. He is frequently asked to guest conduct other groups.
The ‘Classic Christmas’ concert includes ‘The Nutcracker’ by Tchaikovsky; the ‘Christmas Concerto’ by Corelli; and Menotti's opera ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’, which was originally commissioned for television. Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio, who have performed at Lincoln Center and the White House, will play the ‘Concerto in G Major’ by Vivaldi. Performances are scheduled for December 6 and 7. The December 6 concert begins at 10:30 am with doors open at 9:30 am, and the December 7 concert begins at 7:00 pm.
Spiegelman also conducts the BPO in their ‘Jingle Bell Jam’ Sunday afternoon, December 8, at 2:30 pm. The event is family-friendly and audience members are encouraged to sing along to Christmas carols. The BPO could consider working with a banner printing company to create colorful holiday flags for display at the concerts.
