Melissa Brown, the executive director of the Buffalo History Museum uses words like ‘reconnect’, ‘reactivate’, and ‘restore’ to describe the facility's plan to improve and change over 25% of the museum's property.
The organization began raising funds for the project last fall, and succeeded in raising almost all of its stated goal of $1.43m. With the money in hand, construction will begin soon.
Both Byron Brown, Buffalo's mayor, and Mark Polocarz, the Erie County Executive, say investing in the museum is a great idea. It will remind area residents of how much progress has been made in the past, how the community has grown, and how its future might look. Both agree that providing a living history of the Buffalo region means it is necessary to keep modernizing facilities like the museum.
Among the planned improvements are upgrading the lakeside entrance to the museum, and restoring space around the museum's portico. The structure itself is historically important, as it is the last remaining building from the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, when it was the New York State Building.
The first exhibit planned after the renovation is a tribute to the history of sports in Buffalo, and is slated to be ready by November this year.
