What's Happening in Buffalo, NY…

Two Ellicott Development Company projects that have been under consideration for years were recently given the go-ahead by the Buffalo Planning Board. A third is still under discussion.

William and Carl Paladino, who own Ellicott Development, plan to redevelop the former Niagara Lithograph Company property on Niagara Street into apartments and medical offices. The project will join others under development that are revitalizing the city's west side by putting mixed-use developments into older industrial buildings.

The former lithograph company occupied a building comprising 90,000 square feet. The building was first constructed in 1903 and was in use through most of the 20th Century, though it has been almost completely vacant for over 30 years. On the Niagara Street side, the building is two stories in height, but one end of the property slopes down over 15 feet, where both basement and subbasement levels will be made into eight apartments of full-story height. Ellicott intends to use old rendering and photos to enable it to install wooden windows clad in aluminum that will look like the originals.

Ellicott also wants to redevelop a brick six-story building on Michigan Avenue into a mixed-use project offering both retail and residential space. The structure dates back to the late 19th Century, and was the home of the Buffalo Envelope Country, which used the space until early in the 1980s.
