A church in Buffalo's downtown has decided to relocate. The property the church is vacating will be turned into senior housing, according to a November 26 article. The Church of the Ascension will move from Linwood Avenue to Jewett Parkway, where it will share a campus with the Church of the Good Shepherd.
The church did put $80,000 into maintenance efforts, or the structure would have closed down previously. The money has kept the building, which is 164 years old, in suitable enough condition that it can be repurposed.
The Episcopal Church Home & Affiliates will be in charge of the project. The organization currently runs Canterbury Woods, a continuing care facility in Amherst, and is building a similar installation on the site of a former hospital. The Episcopal Church Home & Affiliates is a non-profit organization, and it owns another body, Episcopal Community Housing, Inc., which will be the entity that manages the property.
Current plans indicate the church sanctuary will be left intact for use by the community, while 25 to 30 apartments are created elsewhere on campus. They will be offered to seniors 55 and over, who are on fixed incomes, at affordable rates.
Project management could work with brochure printers to create a booklet for distribution at senior centers, describing the new housing.
