The SteelDrivers are based in Nashville, Tennessee, and are a five-member crew. Their instruments help illustrate the difference between rock and bluegrass. Rock bands usually feature guitars, bass guitars, drums and keyboards. The instruments used by The SteelDrivers include bass and guitar, but also a fiddle, banjo, and a mandolin – all typical of the bluegrass sound.
Bluegrass music is a subset of American roots music and emerged in the Appalachian region in the 1940s. It is named for an early bluegrass outfit, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.
The SteelDrivers have been nominated for the Grammy award several times. In 2009, they were nominated for an award in the category of Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The nomination was for the song “Blue Side of the Mountain.” Two nominations came the following year for “Reckless,” the group’s sophomore album, as Best Bluegrass Album, and for the song “Where Rainbows Never Die” in the category Best Country Performance. They won a Grammy in 2015 for their album, “The Muscle Shoals Recordings.”
