A mill town
Like many towns that developed early in the history of the nation, Williamsville's geographical location near a watercourse determined its growth. The community was located near Ellicott Creek above Glen Falls, and the power of the falls attracted mill owners. In 1811, Jonas Williams built the first mill in the village, a grist mill that gave the village its earliest name, “Williams Mills.” During the 1800s, other mills were built near Williams' grist mill to take advantage of the power of Glen Falls. The Williams' mill is still standing, and is now called the Williamsville Water Mill. In 1841, a raceway, or channel, was built to bring water to the mills from Ellicott Creek. This had the effect of creating a small island, which today is called Island Park.

A wartime community
The young United States and Great Britain found themselves at war again during the War of 1812, less than 20 years after the end of the American Revolution. During that conflict, American troops were billeted in Williamsville, in an area between Ellicott Creek and Garrison Road. The road was lined with barracks, and a field hospital there treated both American troops and British prisoners of war. General Winfield Scott, who would later serve in the American Civil War, took over the Evans house and used it as his headquarters in 1813. At the time, his entire army was billeted in Williamsville, giving the community a strong tie to local history. The village became a safe haven for refugees from Buffalo, which the British burned in 1813.
The small Williamsville Historical Society Museum is the guardian of artifacts and exhibits from throughout the village history. Organizations like this can work with brochure printers to create pamphlets explaining their collections.
