According to consumer advocacy site NerdWallet, Secaucus ranks #6 on its recently published list of “best places for homeownership in New Jersey.”
Scores for each city were calculated from homeownership rates, monthly owner costs as a percentage of median household income, median home value, and population change from 2010 to 2012.
The designation could be listed on forthcoming Stationery printing for the state, realtors, or housing departments.
The study included 70 communities with populations at or above 15,000. If a community had higher-than-average crime rates, or environmental hazards, it was excluded from the top 20.
Many of the communities receiving the highest rankings were located within easy commuting distance to New York City. In all of the top 20 cities, home values were over $200,000, and community residents spent more than 30% of their income on monthly costs related to homeownership.
Secaucus’ population growth was noted in the study as the second highest on the list; the current growth rate for the city is 5%.
For Hudson County communities, Secaucus ranked highest, with Hoboken, Bayonne, Jersey City, West New York, and Union City ranking #43, #50, #57, #63, and #67 respectively. The top ranking city in New Jersey was Williamstown in Monroe Township.
