Unique tree ceremony to take place

Stevensville residents will be able to enjoy a unique take on the tradition of the tree lighting ceremony in early December. The event brings some Maryland flair to the holiday activity.

The 2021 Crab Basket Tree Lighting Ceremony is an event that takes place at Fisherman’s Inn in Grasonville. In addition to the special tree, there will be shopping and other activities available throughout Main Street.

The tree will be up and lit through late January. It is composed of individually painted crab baskets, some featuring a Christmas or winter-themed graphic design, which are then stacked together to form the tree shape. Lights are also added, along with a tree topper.

Many vendors with artisan products, as well as small businesses, will be available for attendees to shop from. Books will be set up for purchase and signing by Brent Lewis and Jay Fleming for the duration of the celebration. Santa will also be present to take selfies with guests.

Proceeds will be given to the Queen Anne’s County Watermen’s Association. A representative of the organization will give a speech at the event, in addition to reading names of members who have passed away this year.

The ceremony will officially start at 6:00 pm on December 4, with the lighting taking place at 6:30 pm. The entire evening will last from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Guests are required to follow the public safety guidelines for Covid-19. The celebration is free to attend, and open to all ages.
