The Charlestown retirement complex in Catonsville recently welcomed Betsy Ross, Deborah Sampson, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Earhart, all courtesy of Patty Carver.
Carver, a professional writer, actress, and singer brought them with her in her acclaimed one-woman show, Patriots of Liberty. The musical production, which she presented at the end of Women's History Month, drew almost 200 attendees.
Carver became each of the four noted women, who then told their own stories of the part they played in American history. Betsy Ross talked about sewing the first American flag, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton talked about her part in the Women's Suffrage Movement and Harriet Tubman, who was a contemporary of hers. Deborah Sampson fought in the Revolutionary War disguised as a man, and told of her adventures in that conflict. Amelia Earhart described the time she flew solo across the Atlantic in May 1932, becoming the first woman to do so.
Having performed across the country and around the globe, from Los Angeles to New York to London, Carver is the artistic director and co-founder of the Connecticut Children's Theatre. She is the author of more than 40 original musicals aimed at audiences of young children. Her works have been seen by more than one million youngsters.
Events such as this can be even more successful if organizers work with a flyer printing company to create a program describing the production.
