Story trail debuts in Catonsville

Banneker Historical Park joined forces with the Baltimore County Public Library's Catonsville branch to open a “story trail”, which is the second such installation in the county. Oregon Ridge Park boasts the first trail, which opened in Fall 2017.

The trail is comprised of a series of signposts that show laminated pages taken from a picture book. There are 17 Signs along the trail, which leads from the play area to an orchard, where it ends under an apple tree. Along the way, it meanders through the woods before leading to the orchard, where pears, peaches, and local plants grow. There are only a few yards between the Signs, and the trail is designed to get children interested in reading.

The project cost about $1,500, and the money came from two sources. The Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library contributed $1,000, with the other $500 coming from the Benjamin Banneker Foundation.

It took only two weeks for park staff and volunteers to put the trail together, fitting work on the project into regular schedules. Several Books have been laminated, and will be used in rotation with others, according to the season of the year.

The book currently being used is Cale Atkinson's 2016 work ‘Explorers of the Wild’. Library staff members and park staff got together to choose the Books for the trail.

Efforts like this can be enhanced if officials work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, describing the new attraction.
