Mother Nature herself is arranging an upcoming event in Catonsville.
The Perseid Meteor Shower is returning, and the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum is holding a Meteor Shower Party to celebrate. A program is planned that will consider meteors in general, and the Perseid Shower in particular. Participants will leave the museum knowing when and where to look for the display in the sky. The best time to see the shower is late in the evening, and the talk should finish in time for participants to get the best view.
The Perseid Meteor Shower, and other similar cosmic events, occur when the Earth moves through the debris left by a comet. The Perseids peak in the middle of August, and are considered by many to be the most spectacular meteor shower of all. The meteors that make up this particular shower are both plentiful and fast, with between 50 and 100 meteors per hour visible. They also tend to have long “wakes” behind them, allowing watchers to spot them easily. Flyer printing can be used to create informative handouts for attendees at this type of event.
The Meteor Shower Party will be held August 11, from 8:00 pm until 9:30 pm, at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum on Oella Avenue. Admission is $3 per person, or $10 for a family. Participants are asked to preregister at the museum.
