Road work closes Catonsville ramp

Work recently started on project to widen a major freeway, making it necessary to shut down one of the ramps in Catonsville.

I-695 is being widened, and in order to facilitate the work, the southbound ramp from the freeway to Maryland 144, also known as Frederick Road, is closed. The closure is at the interchange in Catonsville.

Officials have already set up detours for drivers to follow. They will have to go one mile south to the Wilkens Avenue interchange. Here, they will be directed to northbound I-695, where the Frederick Road ramp is still open. The two ramps leading to I-695 from Frederick Road will remain open throughout the length of the construction. Poster printing is often used to create directional Signs in cases like this.

The project includes building two new bridges across I-695 at Ingleside Avenue and Edmondson Avenue, and putting up new noise barriers and retaining walls. The freeway will be widened so that through traffic will have four lanes, and auxiliary lanes are also being added so that there will be room in the future to add a managed lane.

The State Highway Administration says the whole project is expected to cost about $105.4 million. The ramp should be reopened in April of 2020. Its closure is part of an ongoing project to widen the Outer Loop that is scheduled to be finished late in 2021. The project involves widening 1.44 miles of I-695 southbound.
