Snowmen began appearing around Catonsville in November, according to an article in the Baltimore Sun. Unlike the creepy clowns that have been popping up around the country, these were not real, but 'reel'. They are part of a contest called the “Reel Snowmen of Catonsville Challenge 2016’.
The snowmen were made from the wooden reels used to store and haul electrical wire, and their appearance was the idea of Mark Hayes, a vice president with Rexel, an electrical supply company. When Rexel finished with the reels, it usually threw them out. Apparently, Hayes used the reels to make a snowman, and got so many compliments that he decided to take the effort citywide.
Hayes started collecting the used spools, and by the past October, had enough reels to make 21 snowmen. He saved some for his own use, and distributed the rest among his friends, along with a letter explaining the challenge. People were encouraged to use the reels as framework for snowmen, and then decorate them. The snowmen turned out to be very creative (a beer company mascot among them), rather than traditional Frosty types.
Three winners of the contest were announced on December 30, but there are still awards up for grabs for the People’s Choice and the longest-lasting snowman. Further detail is available on the Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/367212273670969
