After being under consideration for over ten years, the construction of a new courthouse for the Maryland District Court is getting underway. Plans for the courthouse, which will be located in Catonsville, were recently unveiled, and ground could be broken by the end of 2016. It's estimated that construction could take up to two years.
The new courthouse, which comprises 130,000 square feet, will be located in the Rolling Crossroads Professional Park, near Johnnycake Road and North Rolling Road. There will be seven courtrooms in the new structure, more than twice as many as in the current courthouse, which is still in operation. Two small rooms, suitable for hearing civil cases, are also included.
The impetus for the move was the need for additional space. The facility will cost about $50 million, and will be paid for through Maryland capital funding. Budget shortfalls have delayed the project several times. It was originally supposed to be finished by 2015.
The new courthouse replaces the current one, which was built over 25 years ago. The design incorporates advanced security, and has a design that meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. It will have a “green” roof, along with reforestation and eco-bio retention capabilities. These last two enable the building to help manage trees and handle storm water.
