Local baker Taneka Weldon will soon be running her own business, Whimsy Cakes, which opens in the Paradise section of Catonsville later this month.
Weldon got the idea during a blizzard three years ago, when she got stuck in her house and needed a birthday cake for her daughter. Unable to get to the shops to buy one, she baked one herself shaped like a skate. Upon seeing her creation, people began asking her to bake specialty cakes for them. She began making her cakes in a commercial kitchen, but has now to open a storefront of her own.
The location she found originally had no kitchen, but her father, who has his own business in the center, encouraged her to talk to the landlord about helping her renovate the space. It turned out the landlord agreed to assist because he wanted to refurbish the shopping center.
Following advice from the landlord, coffee and doughnuts will be among the offerings at Whimsy, along with the cakes and cookies in which Weldon specializes. In the future, she plans to serve salads and paninis as well.
Weldon will open Whimsy Cakes on March 11. When new food businesses move into the area, they often consider working with a Catonsville flyer printing company on a handout to celebrate the day with special prizes, free coffee, discounts, and similar items.
