Choral music will be part of the upcoming holiday celebrations in Catonsville.
The Department of Music of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County is presenting a performance by the Jubilee Singers, with Janice Jackson handling the duties as director.
In 2001, 20 members of the UMBC Gospel Choir were chosen to form the Jubilee Singers. The course, which is given for academic credit, was started to enhance the university’s choral program by promoting excellence. The group prioritizes the work of African-American composers such as John Works, Moses Hogan, and Undine Moore. The Singers perform gospels, hymns, spirituals, and anthems, as well as works by classical composers like Brahms, Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart.
The ensemble performed for the first time in public in December 2001, and has gone on to perform in Baltimore, Pennsylvania, and the Virgin Islands. The group performs each year at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture, which is sponsored by the university’s Africana Studies department, and has joined with another ensemble, the UMBC Maryland Camerata, to perform excerpts from “Porgy and Bess,” and ‘Treemonisha.” Flyer printing is often used to create programs for events like this.
The Jubilee singers appear from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on December 7, in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall. At 8:00 pm, the full Gospel Choir will perform. The concert is free.
