Cyclocross, a sport that is described as a cross between road and mountain biking, is gaining in popularity, and youth teams have formed in the Baltimore area. Notably, the Baltimore Youth Cycling team has claimed a spot in Catonsville.
The team will practice once per week at Catonsville's Banneker Community Center, and a second time at a different location in Baltimore County.
Joe Nalley, Baltimore Youth Cycling's board president, said he believes cyclocross will become popular in Catonsville once the team is established there. The sport requires riders to race through a number of offroad obstacles. Nalley said he was glad to find a large number of people who were active in biking when he moved to Baltimore two years ago. However, he discovered there were few practice options available to younger riders, a lack he described as the ‘missing link’ in the cycling activities in the Baltimore area.
In order to help prepare kids for cycling competitively, or just to make sure they ride safely, Nalley and his own team, the Baltimore Bicycling Club, decided to bring all the area's young riders together in one unit, which will now practice at least once a week in Catonsville.
BYC officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for area residents, describing the program and inviting people to consider it for their children.
