The Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) recently visited the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) in Catonsville, and based on that and an in-depth self-study, granted initial accreditation to the school’s dance program.
The School of Liberal Arts’ dean, William E. Watson, said there are only two community colleges in the country that have been accredited at the national level in all four of the arts disciplines—visual arts, dance, music, and theater. CCBC is one of these. Leaders of institutions that win honors like this can use brochure printing to disseminate the information to interested parties.
The dance program at CCBC is rigorous, including dance academics, opportunities to perform, creative courses, and dance technique, which lead to one of two degrees: either an Associate of Fine Arts in Fine and Performing Arts; or an Associate of Arts in Dance, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
According to the CCBC Dance Company’s artistic director, Melinda Blomquist, most of the students who obtain a degree in dance at CCBC go on to finish their studies in dance at a four-year college or university.
Students in the dance program enjoy small classes lead by working professional dancers. They learn all types of dance, from ballet to modern dance.
The president of CCBC, Sandra L. Kurtinitis, says that having the dance program accredited will enable the school to recruit young dancers, and reflects the college’s commitment to the arts.
