A run/walk to raise awareness of the disorder phenylketonuria (usually abbreviated PKU) is scheduled for later this year in Catonsville.
The event consists of a three-mile run and a one-mile walk, and the money raised will go to help raise general awareness of the condition, as well as sponsoring research into more effective treatmetns, and an ultimate cure.
PKU is an inherited metabolic disorder. The condition causes a chemical called phenylalanine to increase in the bloodstream, and individuals with the disease cannot process it. Phenylalanine, which the body uses to make protein, is found in some artificial sweeteners and in all food proteins. Without treatment, high phenylalanine levels can cause serious health problems, including mental disabilities. Complicating the issue is the fact the condition has to be diagnosed within a few days of birth or brain damage can occur.
Those who participate in the run will receive a T-shirt, and those over 21 will be able to sip a free beer at the end of the event. There will also be water, bananas, and goodies from the GetFoodGo food truck.
The run/walk will take place May 14 at the Catonsville campus of the CCBC on Rolling Road in Catonsville. Registration is required, with an 8:15 am check-in time, and a 9:00 am start. Organizers might want to create Banners to mark the course, as well as add color to the event.Get a Free Quote for Banners
